In Episode 72 of the 4D Athletes Podcast, Jim and Jason are joined by Mike Murphy to discuss what core characteristics scouts look for when drafting a player.
Michael Murphy spent 3 seasons with the NY Giants’ scouting staff. Murphy has 23 years of NFL experience as a pro and college scout. Prior to joining the Giants, he spent the 2015-16 season as the director of player personnel for the University of Colorado football program building the recruiting department.
From 2008-13, Murphy was a regional scout for the Miami Dolphins. He entered the NFL as a pro personnel assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1996-99. Murphy was a Midwest scout with the Seattle Seahawks from 2000-04, and a national scout with the Dallas Cowboys from 2005-08.
Before beginning his scouting career, Murphy coached on the professional and collegiate levels. He was a graduate assistant at Iowa State (1990-91), while pursuing his master’s degree in Higher Education. Murphy also coached at Arizona Western (1992), Bethel College (1993-94), and with the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League (1995-96).
Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1989 from William Jewell College, where he lettered two seasons in football as a strong safety. He then worked as a student assistant in the football office during the 1989 season.
Murphy was born in Vancouver, B.C., and graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School in Edmonton, where he played football, basketball and soccer and was also on the swim team. His father, Cal, was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2004 following a 26-year career as both a coach and general manager in the CFL. Cal Murphy was part of nine Grey Cup champions and a Super Bowl as a scout for the Indianapolis Colts.
